UI Bug that needs to be fixed

This may be nit, but I find the left pane to be confusing with the expanding and closing tab.

For instance,

1. why does this show up before I have joined a community? this should only show up after in my opinion
2. the UI feels weird with that pane expansion, calling on Theresa / Shivani to investigate
