What is Anki Jiten?

A chrome plugin that takes selected Japanese text and translates each word into a format that can be imported into an anki deck.

Files

The functions of the files that are not third party files are:

  • background.js - Core background script that sets up events for the backend.
  • dictionary.js - JSON format of the edict.txt file.
  • front.js - Sets up events for the front end of the site.
  • translator.js - Utilities dictionary.js to convert words.
  • scripts/
    • edict-to-dictionary.php - Script to convert edict.txt to a JSON object.
  • ui.js - Used by front.js to help facility the UI.

Methodology and Statistics

There are some statistics beneath to show the amount of words per length. The longest terms can be broken up into smaller words.

The application takes a greedy approach and looks for the longest matches before moving onto the next character. Since we know that most words and expressions won't match more than 20 characters, we can check substrings of length 1 to 20. Due to the fact that this number is constant and the lookups in the dictionary are O(1), we know that the worst case running time is O(n) where n is the number of characters in the string.
