I was very excited as a student at the 2nd LGM in like 2007 by the "InGIMP" (instrumented gimp) project, which was a HCI PhD where they added to GIMP a set of super surveillance hooks to measure every undo'able action that the user made and send the data to their servers, and then they did quant analysis on the data to recommend UX improvements and new features. But in a open transparent way, with clear user consent to the EULA.
I mentioned this to @pathumego today and figured I'd drop a note about it here for later discussion, as I suspect many of the lessons learned in that effort were never applied to a font editor before.
