Add Estedad #2228
Comments
Hi. Any updates? |
This font has a Kashida (KSHD) axis, which needs to be registered with Google Font’s axis registry before Estedad (and Mikhak) can be onboarded. However, a Kashida axis isn’t getting enough traction because it’s technically identical to a Glyph Extension (GEXT) axis, and Google Fonts is apprehensive of introducing duplicate concepts for the sole reason of them being culturally unique. See full discussion here. Furthermore, his implementation of the Kashida axis, in my understanding, is wrong. His glyphs extend to both sides identically, which is not how Kashidas are used (they are inserted manually in meaningful places, and only there). His implementation is actually a width axis implementation because the dedicated Kashida character (U+0640) isn’t even playing a role. In other words, there are multiple problems here. So unless the author withdraws from his insistence to register a Kashida axis, both fonts cannot be onboarded to Google Fonts sadly. |
