SUSE distributions

All the distributions listed on this page are either in the SUSE ecosystem

  • The package format is RPM
  • The package manager is ZYpper

The most popular distributions on the page are

  • OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
  • OpenSUSE Leap

The following distributions are in the SUSE ecosystem

  • OpenSUSE Tumbleweed - POPULAR
    • This is the rolling release upstream version of OpenSUSE
    • KDE Plasma is the main WM - It is beautiful!
    • Preferred for laptops
    • Snapshots allow rolling back changes
    • The YAST installer is exceptional
    • community
    • I tested this distro. and I think it is attractive and assembled extremely well.  This is one of my favorite distributions, but I am not using it because I am more familiar with Debian DEB packages than with Zypper RPM packages.  Compared to the other 2 corporate desktop OS distros (Fedora and Ubuntu) I feel that OpenSUSE is the most refined.
  • SLE SUSE Enterprise Linux
    • Oldest Linux Distro #3 after Debian
    • Germany
    • Downstream of OpenSUSE Tumbleweed
    • Two flavors
      • Server (SLES) for servers and mainframes
      • Desktop (SLED) for workstations and desktop computers
    • Gnome, IceWM
  • OpenSUSE Leap - POPULAR
    • This is the point release version of OpenSUSE
    • This is SLE plus extra packages
    • KDE Plasma is the main WM
    • The German government has adopted OpenSUSE with IBM
  • Gecko
    • Offers both point and rolling releases
    • Downstream of OpenSUSE
    • Will not see new releases
