provide an option to hide tray icon

I'm using firetray with thunderbird in linux system. There is a messeging applet already in linux environment which manages different mail clients including thunderbird. I don't need a duplicate system tray icon related to thunderbird but I couldn't find an option to have the minimize on close without showing a system tray icon.
