This is how I used Mercurial and git-hg:
flathub/flathub#443

I used the upstream tarball for the newest release, and a git-formatted diff with my patches on top, instead.

One could probably use git-hg, as I did in the original builds, if they were only building locally (it won't work in Flathub).
