Hello, I’m the administrator of Mac OS Forge. We have had a server providing a Fink mirror at 17.251.224.143 which is known by the following names:

fink.macosforge.org
rsync.macosforge.org
sjc.ca.us.finkmirrors.net
distfiles.sjc.ca.us.finkmirrors.net

In examining the web server logs, it appears this server is no longer being used by the Fink project.

I found this commit from Nov 14, 2014 in which the Fink project disabled the use of this server: 465d6dc

We would like to know if it is acceptable for us to decommission this server, and if so, if any information from its disks needs to be retained or if it can be deleted. Please let me know.

If there’s somebody else I should be contacting about this, please let me know that as well.

Thanks,
-Ryan

We disabled it because it stopped updating its information, which was adversely impacting our users, and nobody replied to my emails concerning this problem.
If you want to decommission it, go ahead.

On the other hand, we also wouldn't mind having an up-to-date US mirror, either.

Over a year ago our old hidden master server crashed (hosted at xs4all.nl).
It seems that this was your upstream server.
It would be nice to get this server reconfigured to pull from a working mirror server.
If this needs changes under finkmirrors.net domain, i can change them (I’m technical administrating this dns-zone).

To get the distfiles, you could pull them from:

rsync://distfiles.finkmirrors.net/distfiles
rsync://distfiles.ber.de.eu.finkmirrors.net/distfiles

It seams that the bindist files are currently not available via rsync.
If they were hosted by you earlier, please let us know so we can get you in contact with the distfiles.finkmirrors.net administrator.

To get the finkinfo, you could pull them from:

rsync://distfiles.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo
rsync://distfiles.ber.de.eu.finkmirrors.net/finkinfo

Currently distfiles.finkmirrors.net pulls every 20 minutes via rsync from ber.de.eu.

If anything is missing to get the mirror working again, just ask =)

After the mirror works again, we are happy to re-add it again to our mirror list.

Yours sincerely
Andreas Gockel

ber.de.eu administrator and technical finkmirrors.net dns-administrator

@ryandesign you can find the new scripts to keep the mirror up to date in our scripts repo. (If you need a script for the distfiles too we also have one of those.)

Thank you for your replies.

It looks like the server hasn't updated after March 4, 2014; maybe that's when your master server went offline. I wasn't the administrator then but I apologize on behalf of Mac OS Forge that we did not attend to the problem at that time.

Rather than fix the server now, we would prefer to shut it down. This should have no additional impact on the Fink project since it has already been without the use of this server for over 21 months.

The web page displayed on each mirror's homepage links to http://wiki.finkproject.org/index.php/Fink:FinkMirrors which, while it does say it is outdated, mentions using master.us.finkmirrors.net, which is still set as a CNAME of fink.macosforge.org. Could whoever is in charge of the DNS for finkmirrors.net change that CNAME to a current server?

It looks like the DNS for master.us.finkmirrors.net has been changed to a CNAME of snitch.finkproject.org, however that server is only responding with an empty directory listing when accessed as http://master.us.finkmirrors.net. Could the web server configuration be adjusted so that it responds with the correct content?

I'll reopen this, and we can close it when we're really done.
