Describe the problem you'd like to solve

  • As a global community, we need to de-carbonise our economies.

  • In 2018 in the UK, an estimated 33 per cent of carbon dioxide emissions were from the transport sector, 27 per cent from energy supply, 18 per cent from business and 18 per cent from the residential sector. Statistical Release: National Statistics

  • The transition to a carbon-free energy market involves the incorporation of electricity generated by a mix of fossil-fuel and renewable sources onto our power grids.

Image of Electricity Netwroks

  • Easily accessible and up-to-date information regarding the carbon intensities and generation mix of energy being delivered to us by our grids could be a useful tool in empowering citizens to lobby and hold government to account.

  • The UK National grid provide a Carbon Intensity API and Generation Mix (National and Regional) APIs

Who are the stakeholders?

  • Global citizens
  • Governments
  • NGOs
  • Electrical grids: building grids, national grids, transnational grids

What is currently being done to solve this problem?

This is a great idea, Judith. We switched to Octopus energy a few yrs ago and I think greater awareness of the mix is so important.

A thought:

  • It could be great to suggest the list of the 4 greenest tariff providers (last updated Aug 2019, so v recent) as listed in the Energy Saving Trust page you've linked to, as a way to take action.
  • In terms of lobbying, maybe we could create and link to a petition? / A form/ standard template for emailing you MP.
