I think we could have either

special url
use root endpoint
return version via some header for all responses

Using root endpoint to provide some generic info seems the best

Having special url is too much
Providing version in headers will generate unnecessary traffic and version check is not needed for every request

Also, the most straightforward would probably to use image tag as a version (or vice versa)
