To install on ubuntu run the following commands
sudo sh -c 'echo "deb http://apt.postgresql.org/pub/repos/apt $(lsb_release -cs)-pgdg main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pgdg.list'
wget --quiet -O - https://www.postgresql.org/media/keys/ACCC4CF8.asc | sudo apt-key add -
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -y install postgresql

To set a password run
sudo -u postgres psql
then run
ALTER ROLE postgres WITH PASSWORD 'postgres';
then you can access psql -U postgres -h 127.0.0.1 -W
using postgres
as password
To enter the postgres CLI without password you should modify the file /etc/postgresql/<postgres-version>/main/pg_hba.conf
for example
sudo nano /etc/postgresql/14/main/pg_hba.conf
then set the METHOD
column values of rows ipv4
and ipv6
to trust
# TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD
# "local" is for Unix domain socket connections only
local all all peer
# IPv4 local connections:
host all all 127.0.0.1/32 scram-sha-256
# IPv6 local connections:
host all all ::1/128 scram-sha-256
