Hello,

I'm just wondering if the Echofon unofficial addon will be updated to the new firefox web extension to be able to work in Firefox 57, that will be out in about 1 month and a half...

Kind regards

The day has come. FF57 is here. I'm still looking for a good alternative... :(

@AntoineTurmel

Maybe a port to Thunderbird would be good in waiting for a proper WebExtension version.

Quantum officially released. Doesn't work anymore :(

What do you suggest as the best alternative to use while the extension is being rewritten? Pale Moon?
I'll look into the Thunderbird port, maybe this can be done without much work.

@nufrankz

Maybe a floating pane like Echofon has with mobile version of Twitter (m.twitter.com)? This way wouldn't lose its workflow (for me) thank you @YoruNoHikage :)

There are several extensions already doing this with the sidebar, maybe you can use of them while we update Echofon. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/search/?q=twitter&appver=57.0

@nufrankz

No one with floating panel (that was the way I use it) but thank you anyway, will try some @YoruNoHikage :)

In the absence of the excellent Echofon, i recommend for those who use Windows 10 the app "Tweeten"
Not the same thing, but it's what you have at the moment...

@nufrankz
Copy link

Tweeten is a good initiative, but it costs almost 190MB, and it's just a boxed version of Chrome running a webpage (although looks good in a way certainly) -_-, almost like Whatsapp for Windows. The same. Thank you anyway:)

I've tried both Twitter for Windows and Tweeten and they lack the same features :

  • counter for unread tweets
  • display of new tweets above the older tweets (reading new tweets from bottom to top)

@darleeneisms

Twitside set up is not as intuitive as Echofon, but I guess you can't have everything -- including the unread tweet count. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/twit-side/

Another voice here hoping for a Quantum version. None of the other Twitter extensions/apps work as well for me as echofon.

I'm also pleading for an update to FF57.

According to https://twitter.com/EchofoxTeam/status/933039549227454466 a new version is supposed to be in the works, but it looks like there hasn't been many updates to the repo since November. Can someone working on the new version please give us an update as to where the process is at the moment?

@YoruNoHikage

As of now, I didn't get to find enough time to work on the new version, definitely planned, just don't know when... My first steps will be to get it work with Pale Moon and/or Thunderbird.

FYI - There is an extended support release version of Firefox that folks can use while waiting for the update. The current ESR version is supported until August 2018.

Just a little update to tell you guys I've looked into it this last weekend and I got Echofon working with Thunderbird. As of now, only the window and the panel are working (there's no sidebar on Thunderbird) but the links doesn't open in the browser (yet). I'll take a deeper look and will release a specific version for it in the coming weeks (yeah sorry, I don't have much time).
I've checked Pale Moon and saw they won't support Web Extensions so I prefer dropping this alternative as I think not a lot of people uses it anyway.

As @yo-bj said, if you guys really want Echofon in the meantime, use Firefox ESR.

EDIT: I got the URLs working. Here's the module if you guys wants to install it on Thunderbird:

Great work YoruNoHikage! You're making us very happy ;)
The Echofon icon appears in the bottom right corner. And the Echofon panel appears in the top left corner. Is it possible to move them else where (e.g. icon up in the main icon bar)?

@YoruNoHikage

@bylokk Thanks :). That's weird, the panel opened right above the icon for me...

Firefox 60 ESR is now here, so the end of the last way to use Firefox and Echofon in a safe way is near. Does anyone still work on a new version of Echofon, post Quantum leap?

I guess Echofon will just die with what's coming on the Twitter side... http://apps-of-a-feather.com/
I guess we can only spread the word...

Sad... also Twitter really wants to focus on reducing spam/bots so that's why they are reducing API access.

This thread is about getting a version of Echofon that works on the newer versions of Firefox. Rolling back to an old version isn't an acceptable option for most of us.

@princeofsky

Especially in terms of security.
Echofon also still works as a Thunderbird extension for now.

@YoruNoHikage

I guess it still works thanks to the REST API, but not fully realtime as before, either it's the old or the new code.

Someone has found a software/extension that saves the last position in the timeline on the last message read as echofon does?
I searched but found nothing but android applications....

Have a look at my last comment. This Win10 app saves the last position. (locally)

Edit: Well, it seems the app is "currently not available".

Hi everyone,

Until today, I was using the version for Thunderbird but it seems that it is not compatible with the new Thunderbird 60.3.0.

Is it the same type of incompatibility as with Firefox Quantum ?

Soon Thunderbird will also start to migrate to WebExtensions (in TB 63/64) but they are not deprecating XUL add-ons yet.

Echofon is not available in the toolbar, and if I try to launch it from the menu it freezes everything and I have to kill Thunderbird.

It seems it does not hold any longer. 6.3.2 and we are S.O.L.

@princeofsky

Same here. Echofon is not available in the Thunderbird's toolbar since 6.3.2.

@tetsujin1979
Copy link

Is there any chance this will be supported in newer version of Firefox?
It's been 18 months since the last release, and there's been no indication of any kind of migration to WebExtensions in that time.
This plugin is the only thing holding me back from upgrading Firefox, and I'm not sure how long more I can justify it.
There's really no other alternative that I can use on my laptop at work that offers the same level of functionality and is as unobtrusive.

@wildthing202
Copy link

I know people here prefer firefox but for now until this updates the best alternative is silver bird on chrome maybe we could try to get that developer to port his extension over to firefox as it won't let me install it on the regular build.

@tetsujin1979
Copy link

I recently found the WaterFox browser - https://www.waterfox.net/ - which is a fork from Firefox, and still supports older version of Firefox add-ons, including echofox.

Would recommend if you want to continue using this

@AntoineTurmel

I no longer use the extension nor want to maintain/rewrite it, so I will let @YoruNoHikage or @ath0mas manage the GitHub Team if developers are interested.

Echofon was one of the best way to check twitter and I still haven't found anything that matches its features. Antoine > Do you use any other software to replace Echofon?

Silverbird M is a great replacement but it's only on Chrome if only the person who made it could port it over to Firefox then I would go back to Firefox.
