as detailed in #32 (comment) there seems not to be a reasonable fix for #32, so we should add to the docs that this is known behaviour, and though undesirable, possibly not reasonably avoidable at the moment.

We should also add the needed git version to the docs. (2.13 and above)

(have assigned myself and will do this weekend, but if anyone else wants to do this then please just leave a comment showing that it's in progress so that we don't duplicate work)
