Using kalatheme_grid_size in a Kalatheme subtheme in /sites/all/themes

Kalamuna created a subtheme of Kalatheme for ASU called OpenASU. I've created a subtheme of Open ASU in sites/all/themes. So I'm working on a subtheme of a subtheme of Kalatheme. I added a new panels layout inside my theme. Everything works nicely except the kalatheme_grid_size class in the tpl.php file. I've had to hardcode the column sizes (the col-md-X class). Is there a way I can take advantage of the calculated Kalatheme grid size class in a subtheme located in sites/all/themes?
