The use-case would typically be that there are GUI tools like FontLab or Glyphs, or other tools, that currently generate some STAT table, and will do a better or worse job at it, and often will produce some reasonable results. But often they will not be sufficient. For example FontLab 7 currently exports STAT with elision and ranges, but not with style-linking. And it only exports into VF.
So there will be a use-base for stylespace files if you want to postprocess the fonts, or if you want to add the STAT to static fonts (if that's supported), and other such cases.
So rather than writing stylespace from scratch, it'd be great to have a way to get the source file from binary fonts, edit and then add it to your build process
I wish there was a tool like that. Not gonna write it myself though :P
