Maybe it also makes sense to investigate the possible usage of Rust-written Skribo in the future - see the introductory blog post about it. Or RustType - alternative to FreeType in Rust.

RustType doesn't support Adobe font format (Type1/CFF) yet, let alone more complex OpenType features. Really wish it could make progress on this part.

Note that RustType merged the PR to use ttf-parser instead:

While it doesn't support TTF yet, it uses that library for OTF.

dpx supports .dfont. But do we need this?
