I remember that Brandon Kelly had posed the question in Twitter if slideouts should become the default edit mode for elements in desktop. I agree that it was the right call not to do this. But...
Maybe this could become an option per entry type? I would argue that some entry types have very simple field layouts, or act just as setting containers, and it is precicely in those cases that a quick edit via slideout is preferable. On the other hand there are long-form articles, or other types of entries where the full editing experience is better, with less distractions, preview etc.
The one negative I can think is that maybe this could be confusing where entries open in different modes on the same index page, but this should be a thing for the developer (or person responsible for AX) to consider and choose what is best for the project.
