New EBS volumes must be formatted before they can be mounted within an EC2 instance (if they are not initialized with an existing EBS snapshot). Formatting EBS volumes through automation appears to be extraordinarily difficult. I am interested to see if it can be done through systemd makefs service. For now, this project relies on the account to have a EBS snapshot that has been formatted.
