Have you tried clearing your browser's cache? Facvicons can be very "sticky" in the cache. |

It looks like you're putting your new icon in
_site
, which is the directory where Jekyll puts the built site (i.e. every time Jekyll builds, it completely overwrites the contents of_site
). If you place the icons inexample.github.io/assets/img/favicons
(rather thanexample.github.io/_site/assets/...
), then they should work.
