I would like to suggest giving an option (default?) to install all things in $HOME, as it makes no sense that appimages get installed in $HOME/AppImages (with root priv) and the desktop file is in /usr/share/applications.
on that note, when installing things with root, I believe we should install appimages system-wide, so using the home dir is not the best location.

I second this. Setting a custom location also fails to include the trailing slash, thus requiring the .desktop file be modified. For example, I have AppImages set to install to ~/.local/bin/appimages/, but the accompanying .desktop will have the path set like ~/.local/bin/appimagesappimagefile.AppImage. This is pretty easy to fix, but it's rather odd that only the Exec directive has this issue. The path to the icon is fine.
