As requested @polly64 , writing down some info:

there are multiple chat/forums platforms with some characteristics - writing down ones familiar to me and mentioned during discusson

Matrix: open protocol, ability to run own server, open source. Has some deeply annoying UX/interface issues. Focus on real time chat.
Discourse: open source, ability to run own server. Focus on longer-living threads.
Slack - focus on real time chat, proprietary, in a stage of more aggressive monetization
Discord - quite good UX but branded as chat platform for gamers. Proprietary, not yet in a stage of more aggressive monetization
