Remove/move some deprecated argument checks

Having extensive deprecated argument checks in functions like epi_slide_opt can make it annoying to read through some of these functions. Consider removing these checks, or moving them into a helper function. Moving into a helper function may not be just copy-paste as some may rely on examining the "current" call or stack frame.
