Many communities have encountered their own Tylenol Moment more or less. For example, Microsoft has almost failed the xbox brand because of the Red Ring of Death. The relationship between the community and developers may be negatively affected for various reasons. We need to assess whether the community is flexible enough to make up for the mistakes we have made through our own efforts.

I think we can evaluate from these aspects:

  1. Whether the community has its own brand committee to enhance the brand value of the community through activities, policies, and empowerment.
  2. Does the community have an emergency response mechanism (other than security), such as a crisis response team, crisis response plan, interaction with the developer experience group, etc.
  3. We need to see whether the community tries to control public opinion, such as whether to delete comments and ban reasonable commenters. (We usually think of this as a negative behavior, but many communities do it)
Maybe there are more, we can discuss together.

By the way, after the Red Ring of Death event, Microsoft is determined to invest a lot in community operations, recalling products and replacing them with new ones for free which preserved the xbox brand. This is an interesting story, and I think everyone can be inspired by it.

Hi @robekeane ! Thanks for suggesting this new metric idea!

In addition to the qualitative assessment, do you think there might be automated ways to collect data? Maybe from something like Discourse moderator features?

@GeorgLink, thanks for your comments, of course, Discourse moderator feature is a good case. Actually when we talk about community moderator, we usually need notice the message tracking system, the community manager can use it for audit improper content that may violate Code of Conduct.

For No.3, blockchain can be used for recording community news, issues, comments and so on without worrying about the information being erased. There are use cases in modern software industry, for example, LF sigstore also considering the possibility of using it for transparent software supply chain.

Interesting!

To "put pen to paper" and make some progress, here is a google doc that we can work in to start describing the metric and how to implement it:

I copy-pasted the description from above as a starting point, it probably could use some editing and additional detail in other sections.
