Typescript error when extending theme

I have switched from v4.12.1 to v5 and I am seeing a typescript error when trying to use theme colors that are present in the v3 theme and not present in the v2 theme.
eg colors.onBackground gives the error that it does not exist on type MD2Colors. The theme.colors object has type MD2Colors | MD3Colors.
I am only using the v3 theme and have extended it to include some custom values.
Can you give me any advice? Thank you.
