Based on https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3690

When a thread is opened, and you got a new message - we should load and display it. We can use heartbeat for that (15 sec beat). Hearbeat should be turned off when user navigates to other pages.

Not sure how difficult this is to do within the Backbone templates, but agree.
