Adding audio processing (DSP) routines to the multichannel audio stream during playback.

Hi,
I'd like to find out if it's possible to add an interface to the project, to allow custom DSP functions to be applied to the multichannel audio stream. If so, I'd appreciate any information you can provide on what the best way to go about implementing this feature is.
I've already submitted a PR #4833 with a tentative (WIP) proposal, which might also provide a better understanding of the change being proposed.
