Miriad is a radio-astronomy data reduction package, developed by Bob
Sault for BIMA, starting in 1987. Although it was originally developed
to meet the needs of  the BIMA consortium; an ATNF version - derived
from the same code base - is also available independently. Apart from
BIMA and ATNF, MIRIAD is also known to handle e.g. VLA and WSRT data.
With the move and incoorporation of (nine) BIMA antennas into the CARMA
array, the BIMA version of miriad was retired, and the current version
is called the CARMA version of MIRIAD.

This CARMA release of MIRIAD is under CVS control, and daily snapshots
are available.  If you see a file 'VERSION.cvs' in the root directory,
this is not an officially blessed MIRIAD release, but a "CVS"
snapshot. The VERSION file contains the official release number (4.0.0
or higher in CVS for CARMA, 3.x for older BIMA related releases).

Starting in 2007 every June we release a new blessed version of MIRIAD for
the CARMA summer school, but despite that, there are important updates
you should use the "cd $MIR; cvs update" method for, mostly because
the fluxes and baseline files have been updated.

A github version is maintained in https://github.com/pkgw/carma-miriad
but the umd-CVS version is the official version. This version was cloned
into github as https://github.com/astroumd/miriad.  As of this writing
it is unclear how we can sync these two versions, but seems to be a
feature of how MIRIAD was developed spiced with the NIH syndrome,as
there are at least 3 more versions of MIRIAD in the wild.


The preferred way to fork and contribute to GITHUB would be
  (taking an example for teuben as user,and test123 as branchname,
  all assuming teuben has forked via his github account)
