When joining two catalogs using the through argument (an association catalog), the alignment object is still constructed on-the-fly from the left and right catalogs, considering only those partitions with explicit spatial overlap (or overlap in margins). This defeats some of the benefits of the association table, to link partitions that might otherwise be too far apart.
