The official documentation talks escaping a whitespace \ before { in order to allow for alternatives.
That would also allow to set choice titles through variables (which would be great as I haven't found an alternative way to achieve that) like so: * \ {textVariable} or even * {condition} \ {textVariable}

Sounds lika an option, didn't know about the official solution before.

So the narrator doesn't have a way to use vars in the choice title? Hm, not good.
For some reason I used to think it was present. Now it's part of this ticket, definitely.
