I've noticed that often downloads become very slow, and they become fast again when I restart the software. For some of the files, it seems to also find new sources after re-start.
This is counter-intuitive, one would think that the software would download faster after a while as you come ahead in the queue of various users, and new sources are found over time.
It seems however that the software is not maybe "trying" enough looking for new sources or checking if sources have new slots for them, and it becomes slow. Re-starting the software often makes it faster!

For anyone stumbling on this: I moved to eMule... using wine, cuz I'm on Linux, and after a few days of using it I can confirm that it downloads way faster.
For others on Linux: I did stumble on this issue: https://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=37658
Basically, after some time, eMule would freeze using high CPU and not responding. However downgrading Wine to 6.22 made it work for me!
