As redcarpet formatter uses the redcarpet gem (see -> here) maybe it's better to ask the current maintainer to enhance it. (Redcarpet uses the sundown C library, so either redcarpet adds support for stmd (which is going to change its name to cmark), or sundown changes; which I think is unlikely.)

Or wait for a completely new implementation and incorporate an option to use that instead of redcarpet (but then the name loses a bit of its meaning).
