A first simple step would be to support ...

esptool: so that pre-built firmware can be flashed to ESP8266
luatool: for simple command-line loading of Lua scripts to ESP8266
minicom: for interactive terminal serial connection to ESP8266 NodeMCU interpreter
ESPlorer / Java: for GUI IDE for easy Lua script development and ESP8266 NodeMCU filesystem management, etc

A more complicated step would be to support (for workshop 3) ...

Tensilca Xtensa LX3 GCC cross-compiler
ESP8266 SDKs for development
Simple native C examples, plus AT command and IoT demo firmware source
NodeMCU build environment
