I would also add that MOC-rho plots are usefully remapped to MOC-zbar plots, where zbar is the zonal/time averaged depth of the isopycnal. I also observe that latitude is not an ideal horizontal coordinate for overturning next to Antarctica. Perhaps we should instead follow Andrew Stewart et al (2018) JPO Section 2e, where he defines a latitude-like coordinate y* according to topography (see his equations 11 and 13). Zonal integrals/averages around Antarctica are dodgy at best, misleading at worse. |
Matt, just noting here that I've split off the cross-slope transect plots from this issue into a new issue here, so we can keep these tasks and discussion more focused. |

Yeah, I think what @StephenGriffies said about zonal averaging is what we're seeing here? There are the anomalies between 70S-65S (red in up, blue in down) that are probably been underestimated because of the zonal average. |
I'm also surprised by this. Maybe it is just too short a time for the change to be fully realised at 55°S, which is where I would like to measure bottom water transport. |
Does that mean I win the bet (10%) or Wilma (15%)?

I'd love to also see MOC plots in both lat-z and lat-rho coordinates - zoomed into the abyssal cell regions if need be. And basic stuff like cross-sections (lat-depth) of neutral / isopycnal surfaces, again zoomed into the shelf region, perhaps separately for the dense, warm, and fresh shelf sectors. Just to check the overall Ekman pumping adjustments that play out.
