Why not use youtube-dl or libquvi?

youtube-dl is written in Python and provides more functionality as far as playing non-youtube streaming video links. You could probably use it as a library or alternatively just run it on the command line in /tmp. Also there's https://github.com/metal3d/python-libquvi which may work as well.
