tips and tricks for making code faster

thoughts about what to include:

gprof2dot: the wonderful thing that makes the flowcharts showing you which parts of your code are slow
doing append in loops, then turning into numpy array after the loop
the wonders of turning a loop into matrix multiplication (dig up some old examples where I've done this for eg fisher matrices, cause I do this LITERALLY all the time)
