Modal dialog doesn't disappear on back button (url hash change)

If I'm at http://example.com/mobi#page2 and hit the back button to go to http://example.com/mobi#page1, the modal dialog doesn't disappear. This may be by design, is it?

+1 for this. It's very annoying for mobile users

IMO, you should handle your own history URL changes yourself, making sure your app's state reacts to URL changes.
