Windscribe randomly disconnects, could not retrieve server configuration when reconnecting (Wireguard) #217

Describe the bug

When using Wireguard, Windscribe randomly disconnects and shows 'could not retrieve server configuration' after trying to reconnect. This happened when I selected 'auto' and 'always-on' Firewall option.

I have no internet connection issue. The issue only happened on my Linux device and didn't happen on my Android phone.

Here is the log when the issue occurred.

OS and app information:

  • OS: Silverblue 47
  • App version: 2.13.8

To Reproduce
Steps to reproduce the behavior:

  1. Connect Windscribe using Wireguard.
  2. Windscribe randomly disconnects.
  3. Reconnect Windscribe.

Expected behavior

Windscribe shouldn't randomly lose connection if the internet is fine. Even Windscribe loses connection, it should re-establish connection after reconnecting.

Thanks for the report. We are investigating.

Thank you. I found that the random disconnection issue still occurs when using the UDP protocol. However, I was able to reconnect without the 'could not retrieve server configuration' error like Wireguard.

We're still looking into this; in the meantime, does this happen to you only on this one location (Melbourne - Yarra) or all locations?

It happened to other locations as well.

What happened here seems to be that your network is dropping out randomly, and sometimes the OS is telling us that there's no internet connectivity (in which case, when the network comes back, we successfully reconnect), and in other cases it simply drops out and we don't know about it for a while. When this happens, we retry with various failover servers until we eventually exhaust them all. Once this happens, you may see the "Could not retrieve server configuration" message.

There may be some ways we can reduce the likelihood of this happening in the client, but the root cause for the network dropping is not clear to me.

Can you make sure to disable the wifi power management and see if that helps? I believe Fedora 41 and derivatives made the power-saving profile the default.

Thanks! I think the wifi connection could be a little spotty, i.e. it might lose connectivity for a few secs, but never really disconnects. If I'm not connecting to Windscribe, my wifi won't disconnect. The same issue also didn't happen on my Android device running Windscribe and connected to the same Wifi.

I have disabled the wifi power management as you suggested. Will report you back if I find out anything.

Disabling wifi power management didn't resolve the issue.
