In vanilla, when placing stairs against the side of a block, the vertical orientation of the stairs depend on which half of the block you are aiming at: aiming at the upper-half will place it upside down, aiming at the lower-half will place it upright.
With carry-on, the vertical orientation instead depends on where the player's feet are located relative to the target block: standing above will place the stairs upside-down, standing at the same level or below will place the stairs upright.
