Great to see continued activity on this fantastic package, I'm planning to give it a spin for an application in which leaflet + pushing uncompressed GeoJSON doesn't really work (see here if interested).
I'll happily provide constructive feedback with reference to reproducible examples on the dev version (assuming that's a good idea, there seem to have been some good developments since last CRAN release).
However, the question I'd like to ask here is more blueskies: have you thought about integrating mapdeck + 'geoarrow'?
Context, from a presentation by Kyle Barron seems the two could work well together and it seems that 'geoarrow' is going to become dominant from around next year, with DuckDB and other things increasingly support the spec out of the box with promising preliminary results (e.g. https://github.com/cboettig/duckdbfs ).

Within Symbolix we've been developing lots of internal processes using geoarrow & related tools, so hopefully we can start porting that work over to mapdeck soon.
