Hey guys, - newbie here.. is there a way to disable direct messaging hubot on slack to run commands? Would like to keep all comms in a specific channel.

It depends on Hubot Adapter you use. Some may have this specific functionality, some may not.
See hubotio/hubot#1356 (comment) with useful topic mentions.

Also in theory, it might be possible to implement it, after looking at slackapi/hubot-slack#339
