Trying to add a gist for the paper with doi 10.1371/journal.pgen.1004365, the form doesn't load the data. Looking at the console I get a null response from http://www.sciencegist.com/papers_metadata.json?q=10.1371%2Fjournal.pgen.1004365.
I then filled in the paper details manually, and when I submitted the form saw a "we're sorry, something went wrong" error.
Please let me know if I can provide any more details to help.
It works if the format is exactly as expected, i.e.: try "doi: 10.1371/journal.pgen.1004365"
I agree that this should be more foolproof, so that queries like "10.1371/journal.pgen.1004365" default to DOI searching. The exact format so far is required because we need to make a distinction between arxiv and doi references.

Edit: I just noticed that the gist actually went through with the manual submission: http://www.sciencegist.com/gists/488
