The purpose of this document is to present the results of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations conducted for the tail cone section of the AMPEL360XWLRGA aircraft. These simulations aim to analyze the aerodynamic performance and identify potential areas for design improvements.
The analysis focuses on the tail cone section, evaluating parameters such as pressure distribution, velocity streamlines, and drag coefficient. The results will be used to optimize the design for enhanced aerodynamic efficiency.
The simulations were performed using ANSYS Fluent software on a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster with the following specifications:
- Processor: Intel Xeon Gold 6258R
- RAM: 512 GB
- Operating System: CentOS 7
The tail cone geometry was created using CAD software and imported into ANSYS Fluent. The mesh was generated using a hybrid approach, combining tetrahedral and hexahedral elements to ensure accuracy and computational efficiency.

- Mesh Type: Hybrid (tetrahedral and hexahedral)
- Mesh Quality: Skewness < 0.8, Orthogonal Quality > 0.2
The material properties used in the simulations are as follows:
- Material: Aluminum Alloy 7075-T6
- Density: 2810 kg/m³
- Specific Heat: 960 J/kg·K
- Thermal Conductivity: 130 W/m·K
The following boundary conditions were applied:
- Inlet Velocity: 250 m/s
- Outlet Pressure: 101325 Pa
- Wall Conditions: No-slip condition
Two load cases were considered:
- Cruise Condition: Inlet velocity of 250 m/s at an altitude of 10,000 meters.
- Takeoff Condition: Inlet velocity of 100 m/s at sea level.
- The flow is assumed to be steady and incompressible.
- Turbulence is modeled using the k-ε turbulence model.
- The effects of temperature variations are neglected.
The results are presented in the form of pressure contours, velocity streamlines, and drag coefficient values.
The pressure contours indicate areas of high and low pressure on the tail cone surface.
The velocity streamlines show the flow patterns around the tail cone, highlighting regions of flow separation and recirculation.
The drag coefficient for the tail cone section was calculated as follows:
- Cruise Condition: Cd = 0.025
- Takeoff Condition: Cd = 0.035

An uncertainty analysis was performed to assess the reliability of the simulation results. The primary sources of uncertainty include mesh quality, turbulence model selection, and boundary condition assumptions. The overall uncertainty is estimated to be ±5%.
The pressure contours and velocity streamlines indicate that the tail cone design performs well under both cruise and takeoff conditions. The drag coefficient values are within acceptable limits, suggesting that the design is aerodynamically efficient.
The simulation results were compared with theoretical predictions and experimental data from wind tunnel tests. The drag coefficient values are consistent with the theoretical predictions, validating the accuracy of the simulations.
The simulations identified a few critical areas where flow separation occurs, leading to increased drag. These areas will be targeted for design improvements to enhance aerodynamic performance.
A sensitivity analysis was conducted to evaluate how variations in input parameters affect the simulation results. The analysis showed that the drag coefficient is most sensitive to changes in inlet velocity and turbulence model parameters.
