Hi @Openscapes/2023-swrcb-cohort,

Thanks for a great fourth session last Wednesday. Our team enjoyed the open discussion with our fantastic guest teacher, Emily “Em” Markowitz!! We were really inspired by the conversation and by her quote below because many of us have also inherited challenging data systems or architecture and are in a process of evolving or even replacing them so that our work, products, and services can be more efficient, effective, equitable, inclusive, and kind.

“I made a commitment to changing the architecture of the system I inherited – and that is no small feat…”.

Below is a light digest of Call 4, including a reminder for your Seaside Chats and TWO Co-Working times before our Call 5 on Thursday, October 11th. Looking forward to seeing you then!

Have a good week,
Anna, Devan, and Tina

Digest: Cohort Call 4 [ 2023-SWRCB ]

Goals: how to use GitHub for project management & data strategies for future us!

Task for next time:

  1. Have a Seaside Chat with your broader team
  2. Prepare to present your Pathway on Call 5 (Oct 11th)
  • Each group has 10 minutes to share their pathway: (5 min present + 5 min Qs)
  • Share your Pathway Doc in our Pathway Share folder before Call 5
  1. Co-working: (optional). This is a time to come work on your own data science things, but also be able to talk things through and screenshare to get help from others. Note that we have TWO co-working sessions scheduled: September 28th, 2:00 - 3:00pm and October 5th, 2:00 - 3:00 pm.

Slide Decks:

A few lines from shared notes in the Agenda doc:

  • ‎‎‎‎*‎‎GitHub issues are a great alternative to emails – everything in one place, with a simple yet pleasing interface and the satisfaction of CLOSING something once it’s completed/resolved!+1+1 on closing! +1+1
  • *One of the biggest challenges I am currently facing is document sharing with external folks and being able to share a document like this during a meeting with the external folks – I like how Github has the functionality to document and communicate with external folks plus helps manage the project +1+1
  • I hadn’t considered using GitHub for GIS projects, and it seems more user-friendly than some alternatives. +1+1+1+1
  • [Another quote from Em’s talk] “We need to share our hard work with the people who care about it --- or those that don’t -- everyone and everyone!” +10000 💜+1
  • Cool use of GitHub website for fieldwork working resources (safety sheets, tools, etc.) Nice that this is also transparent. +1
  • Are tables like this on a GitHub website created in code like R, html code, pulled from a (live?) spreadsheet, or a GUI?
  • It can be created in R/python/google sheets and shared/posted via html or GitHub.io
