will probably use sympy or pint directly e.g.
resting: -60mV
spike times: [1ms 1.2ms ...]

This could use methods from pylems, see https://github.com/LEMS/pylems/blob/master/lems/test/test_units.py.

This has the advantage that only units which are known by NeuroML 2 are supported.
