Overall, as long as there is a way to ignore arbitrary non-bids compliant files/folders via .bidsignore, there is really no reason to aggressively ignore all files/folders starting with . - there could be legit cases of people adding some configuration files for helper tools (e.g. codespell) etc.
I wonder what was initial motivation behind imposing such restrictions?
(I would definitely explicitly forbid/ignore known trash stuff like .DS_Store though ;) ).

I wonder if may be there could be some middle ground -- an explicit whitelisting somehow. May be if explicitly listed in .bidsignore file? pre-commit could grep '^\.' for such cases...
