All attendees, speakers, sponsors and volunteers at our conference are required to agree with the following code of conduct. Organisers will enforce this code throughout the event. We expect cooperation from all participants to help ensure a safe environment for everybody.

THE QUICK VERSION

Our conference is dedicated to providing a harassment-free conference experience for everyone, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion (or lack thereof), or technology choices. We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form. Sexual language and imagery is not appropriate for any conference venue, including talks, workshops, parties, Twitter and other online media. Conference participants violating these rules may be sanctioned or expelled from the conference without a refund at the discretion of the conference organisers.

THE LESS QUICK VERSION

Harassment includes offensive verbal comments related to gender, gender identity and expression, age, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, religion, technology choices, sexual images in public spaces, deliberate intimidation, stalking, following, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks or other events, inappropriate physical contact, and unwelcome sexual attention.

Participants asked to stop any harassing behavior are expected to comply immediately.

Dr. Carter Christopher is Section Head for Human Dynamics R&D in Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Geospatial Science and Human Security Division. Dr. Christopher leads the Human Geography, Location Intelligence, Built Environment Characterization, and Geoinformatics Engineering research groups at the lab, to solve national- and global-scale challenges for Energy Security and National Security. He is also the Principal Investigator and/or Program Manager for a diverse portfolio of projects, ranging from hazardous material routing and risk characterization to large-scale human mobility modeling, to alternative PNT solutions for the electric grid. Prior to joining ORNL, Dr. Christopher was Head of Geospatial at an aerospace start-up, and he had a distinguished 12-year career in the Intelligence Community. He spent more than 10 years at the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency where he led a range of geospatial modernization programs, including ML/AI-driven object detection and mapping, cloud modernization and geospatial software-as-a-service provisioning for the IC, data science and advanced geospatial analysis, and global GIS training. Dr. Christopher closed his Federal career at the US State Department as Deputy to the Geographer of the United States, where he helped stand up the Department’s enterprise GIS and led human geography and humanitarian mapping initiatives. Prior to Federal service, Dr. Christopher held analyst and project management roles in the geospatial private sector. He has a PhD in Earth Systems and Geoinformation Science, a MS in Geography and Remote Sensing, and a BA in Government.

David Carter is the GIO for the DOI. He leads the DOI Geospatial Advisory Committee which consists of Geospatial leads for 11 Bureaus and the Office of the Secretary. David coordinates DOI response and implementation of federal law and executive orders such as the Geospatial Data act. In his role he is also the managing partner of the Federal GeoPlatform, geoplatform.gov. David is accessible at david_p_carter@ios.doi.gov.

Eddie Pickle is Sr. Vice President, Public Sector, at Crunchy Data — a leading provider of open source PostgreSQL database and PostGIS technology and support.  Eddie began his open source career at the pioneering geospatial leader OpenGeo, and was the founding CEO when OpenGeo became Boundless.  He has also been a senior executive at software (IONIC, RadiantBlue) and data (Maxar, Claritas/Nielsen, IXI) leaders, working with commercial, government, and NGO organizations worldwide.  Eddie co-founded the FedGeoDay and FOSS4G North America conferences, and he holds a MA degree in Geography from UCLA, and a BA in Geography from the University of Tennessee.

Frontiers of Open Land Imaging for Data Science

The Sustainable Land Imaging (SLI) Program is a collaboration between the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Department of the Interior (DOI) United States Geological Survey (USGS) to ensure the continuation of no-cost, high-quality, and global land-imaging measurements compatible with the existing Landsat record dating back to 1972. This talk provides an overview of the development of data science methods at USGS to advance the utility of the Landsat data archive needed to explain, model, and ultimately forecast changes to the Earth's land surface in support of decision-making for societal benefit. The availability of Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) released in 2017 by the USGS over the United States facilitated the development of time-series products as demonstrated through the USGS Land Change Monitoring, Assessment, and Projection (LCMAP) initiative. A long-term objective is to develop a strategic framework for leveraging multiple Earth observing space systems collectively via harmonized observations, together with data science methodology as part of an open global land imaging and science capability.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)

Dr. Pete Doucette is the Acting Director for the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. EROS is part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI). The EROS mission is to develop and operate Landsat satellites, and provide land change science data to support our understanding of the changing Earth. Dr. Doucette began his career in geospatial science in 1990, which has included positions with the federal government, a national lab, and the private sector. His past activities include research & development in remote sensing, machine learning, computer vision, and spatial analysis. He holds a Ph.D. in Spatial Information Engineering (UMaine), M.S. in Geomatics (Purdue), and B.S. in Physics (UMaine).

Mr. Joshua Delmonico serves as the Executive Director for the Federal Geographic Data Committee providing the leadership, coordination, and communication to promote the development, use, sharing, and dissemination of geospatial data nationwide. In this role he provides executive leadership for the coordination of U.S. federal geospatial activities in collaboration with the 32 FGDC member Federal Agencies and OMB to implement the Geospatial Data Act and conduct strategic planning and visioning for the implementation of National Spatial Data Infrastructure (NSDI) across Federal, State, Tribal and local government agencies, academic institutions, non-profit organizations and the private sector. 

Previously, Mr. Delmonico served in various positions leading Geospatial programs for the Department of Defense where his portfolio included architecture, engineering, standards, test and certification, enterprise system development, modeling and simulation, 3D, AR/VR, artificial intelligence, and research in support of mission readiness, training, and planning.  Additionally, Mr Delmonico coordinated development of geospatial policy and the design and development of GIS systems connecting multiple organizations and national and international operating locations He has a B.S. in Biology from the State University of New York at New Paltz (1994) and a M.S. in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (2010).

Maggie Cawley serves as the Executive Director for OpenStreetMap US. She joined OSM US in 2019 after 15 years as a geospatial professional with experience across all sectors, with a focus on sustainability and urban planning. Maggie also currently serves as the vice chair of the National Geospatial Advisory Committee, and holds a MA in Urban and Regional Planning from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BA in International Studies from the University of Richmond.

OpenStreetMap US, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, advances geospatial data democracy by catalyzing collaborative action around OpenStreetMap, the world's largest crowdsourced map. OSM US strives to ensure that OpenStreetMap is leveraged equitably through targeted education and outreach to incorporate individuals and communities under-represented in policymaking and technology circles into the open geospatial data movement. Grassroots and community-based programs like the Trails Stewardship initiative create pathways for individuals to access and improve OpenStreetMap as it increasingly becomes the source decision-makers and corporations use to impact our lives.
