This idea has floated around for a while, and surprisingly, there's no ticket for it. So here is the ticket to make an adapter for OpenStack. I'm sure there are many open/unanswered questions for the implementer, so there's likely going to be a lot of investigation first.

Openstack is like VMware, it's a hypervisor platform designed to run VMs. How would OnDemand interact with a VM platform? Would OnDemand spin up a new VM for a desktop or something? I can't imagine how or why OnDemand would have to interact with Openstack.

I think so. I don't have any plans to implement this anytime soon, but yea, per user VMs is something we'd have to overcome.

People have asked for this over the years, and yea we're not going to do it anytime soon, it's more like yea we had this idea, though we're not going to work on it anytime soon type of thing.

Per user VMs could also be possible with Kubernetes: https://kubevirt.io/.
