In the light of /OPM/opm-simulators#768 /OPM/opm-simulators#769 I would love to see some checks for the input parameters to detect usage problems. The following come to mind:

Check ascending order of report_step in writeTimeStep.
Check validitiy of report_step in writeTimeStep. (to prevent people using the time step number).
