For flexibility, it would be great (just a lot more work, hence #1 first) to support JMAP clients.
Unlike IMAP or POP, JMAP actually could be done in a Lambda - which (from outside AWS) can only be reached by HTTP(S).
(JMAP is just application/json - maybe it actually uses /jmap or /json+jmap or something, I'm not sure - content over HTTP.)
