Should update a record's modified field when merging data from other sources

For example, when adding the media to a specimen in the associatedMedia field, should we update the specimen's modified time to the later of its value and the linked media's values? Or indeed when merging a taxonomy update into a base specimen record. Or updating the GBIF data on a specimen record? Or should this modified field remain a direct mapping from the EMu value for that ecatalogue record?
